Take a look at our past events.
Attention!!
The Mahoning is back for our 74th season!
Announcing the 2023 Mahoning Drive-In Theater season opener: our annual trip back in time with two beloved family classics, THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) and WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971)!
On April 28-29, we present our traditional opening double feature, a time for friends and family to come together and celebrate classic cinema under the stars with two films so many of us grew up with, from annual TV broadcasts to early home video, filled with pure imagination that took us over the rainbow to magical lands filled with sparkling wonders.
On Friday night, we join Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion as they dodge the Wicked Witch in search of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Then, after a brief intermission, everyone gets a Golden Ticket to enter the tasty, tantalizing (and occasionally terrifying) world of WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, the most musically munchable movie of all time!
**This year, due to popular demand, we’ll be flipping the order of films on Saturday night, starting off with WILLY WONKA and winding up in OZ, to allow our younger (and/or sleeper) patrons to see Gene Wilder do his thing at an earlier hour.
In addition to both films presented in glorious 35mm, we’ll have a live DJ set before the films, themed décor and photo ops, costumed characters, special themed food items, raffles and one lucky winner each night who’ll find a Golden Ticket in their popcorn, redeemable for fabulous Wonka-worthy prizes!
Plus vintage 35mm family film trailers and snack bar ads before each film!
On Sunday, April 30th, it’s time to get freaky with a 20th anniversary 35mm screening of Tom Stern and Alex Winter’s twisted comedy FREAKED (1993)! And introducing our first-of-many themed vendor markets! Join us early for a fabulously funky “Halfway To Halloween” market beginning at 3pm, right up to sundown! Presented in association with the Lehigh Valley Horror Community.
If you’ve longed to see Mr. T as a bearded lady and Keanu Reeves as the Dog Boy, and a cast of familiar faces in a tale of toxic waste and hideous mutant freekz, this is the film for you! Unlike anything you’ve ever seen, FREAKED is a hilarious and mind-bending dark dive into sideshow silliness, with make-up FX by The Chiodo Brothers (KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, CRITTERS) and music by Henry Rollins, Blind Idiot God, Parliament Funkadelic, and the Butthole Surfers, and perhaps the world’s only sock-headed bellringer. Barely released theatrically in 1993, this is a rare chance to see FREAKED on glorious 35mm, on the FREAKishly large Mahoning screen!
And if that wasn’t cool enough, the action starts early with a “Halfway To Halloween” market filled with local artists from our community, offering all manner of horror-themed wares on the Mahoning lot, so arrive early and load up on freakishly fabulous finds!
Gates open at 3pm for the “Halfway To Halloween” market, and FREAKED hits the screen at sundown! General Tickets include Market & Film.

What could be causing this wave of forced conformity? Kevin McCarthy races to find answers and avoid falling asleep, with Dana Wynter and Carolyn Jones among a cast of familiar 50s faces, in this black and white Superscope classic from Don Siegel.
Then, watch out! They get you while you’re sleeping, in Philip Kaufman’s Me Decade reimagining of the pod people problem as Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy discover a wave of unusual behavior in San Francisco. Is it self-improvement, self-involvement, self medicating, or….something else…? A masterfully done film that’s permeated with dread and unease from its opening frames, one of the rare remakes that holds its own against the original.

Scott as a grieving man who rents a spacious old house and finds that he’s not quite as alone as he thinks. Someone, or someTHING makes its presence known, and sends him on an investigation into the house’s troubled past.

On Friday, June 23rd, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater kicks off- our Screenwriter Spotlight series, celebrating those from whose typewriters sprung big-screen classics, when we welcome iconic screenwriter Carl Gottlieb to our theater for a 35mm double feature of JAWS (1975) and THE JERK (1979)! VIP package available.
Carl Gottlieb’s career spans decades of American comedy, from being a member of the 60s improv comedy troupe The Committee, writing for classic TV and variety series like THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR (for which he won an Emmy), to crafting features like JAWS 1-3, THE JERK, CAVEMAN (which he also directed), and DOCTOR DETROIT, as well as writing the best-selling making-of book THE JAWS LOG.
VIP: Early entry at 4p. Exclusive Photo Op with Carl in our 35mm projection booth before main gate!
We’ll begin the evening with one of the most popular thrillers of all-time, Stephen Spielberg’s blockbuster JAWS, starring Roy Scheider as the sheriff of a small Massachusetts Island with a bit of a shark problem… Featuring Carl Gottlieb as Harry Meadows, local Amity reporter.
We follow the sheer terror of aquatic death with the sheer hilarity of Steve Martin in THE JERK, following the rags to riches story of one Navin Johnson, a pigmentally-challenged member of a rural African-American family who sets out on his own to find his way in the world, falling upwards in spectacular fashion. Featuring Carl Gottlieb as Iron Balls McGinty, mafia enforcer.
Carl will be joining us before and between films to meet fans, pose for photo ops, and sign and sell autographs and copies of the latest edition of THE JAWS LOG. His appearance made possible by FrightRags & Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co.
Gates at 6pm each night. Showtime at Sundown.
On Saturday, June 24th, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater asks, “What do you do when you’ve done it all?”
CANNONBALL!
Get ready to hop in the car and head for the horizon as we present the classic all-star no-rules road race comedies THE CANNONBALL RUN (1981) and CANNONBALL RUN II (1984), along with rare footage and special surprises!
The Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Sea Memorial Trophy dash was an actual underground road race launched by CAR & DRIVER editor Brock Yates in the early 70s, and was twice the subject of a big screen treatment before the stars aligned with Hal Needham’s THE CANNONBALL RUN in 1981 (produced by Al Ruddy, who gave us THE GODFATHER!), one of the most popular films of that year, starring Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Adrienne Barbeau, Sammy Davis, Jr, Roger Moore, Jackie Chan and countless others, not to mention the sleek 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP 400 S, the dream car of a generation. A wild, stunt-filled, laugh-a-mile adaptation that’s more fact-based than most viewers ever realized, it launched a million scofflaw daydreams and Cannonball record attempts that continue to this day. We’re thrilled to present a rare 35mm print of this haven of highway hooliganism on the big screen, where you can sit behind the wheel of your own mean machine and virtually head for the Portofino Inn with the rest of the wacky racers.
We follow that with the equally all-star and arguably sillier sequel, CANNONBALL RUN II (presented digitally), with our old pals out for high-speed cross-country vehicular mayhem once again, interrupted by mobsters, melees and monster trucks! Featuring returning cast members Reynolds, DeLuise, Jamie Farr, and Jack Elam, and new petrol pals Don Knotts, Catherine Bach, Charles Nelson Reilly, Frank Sinatra and a limo-driving orangutan! Plus, a theme song by Menudo!
We’re inviting former Cannonball racers and their cars to join us for this once-in-a-lifetime screening and celebration of these Burt Reynolds/Hal Needham classics, with more details to be announced!

We begin with an experiment in fear…
“Once there was a man whose prison was a chair. The man had a monkey, they made the strangest pair. The monkey ruled the man, it climbed inside his head. And now as fate would have it, one of them is dead”.
So read the poster of MONKEYSHINES (1988), a terrifying tale of a quadriplegic man (Jason Beghe) with a small simian household helper who turns tail and runs deep into darkness. Featuring Boo as Ella, the monkey of your nightmares.
Then, there are very good reasons to be afraid of the dark, as we present George A. Romero’s adaptation of Stephen King’s THE DARK HALF (1993). Inspired by King’s own revelation of this Richard Bachman pen name, writer Timothy Hutton’s pseudonymous literary alter ego escapes from the page and erupts into his life, seeking to drive a poison pen into his existence.
Come early for a Live DJ, Themed Eats and curated Romero Trailer Reels before each film.
